Keratoconus has been thought of as a relatively rare (1 in 2500 incidence) condition. However, the inicidence maybe as high as 1 in 500 in "hot spots" around the world, including the Caribbean. Until the creation of SGHO, there had not been a dedicated keratoconus hosital department in Trinidad and Tobago. Contact Lens options were limited for a long time to RGP lenses and there is no Eye Bank in the country to ebnable corneal grafts. As many keratoconics are simply RGP intolerant, soft contact lensoptions are essential to allow a normal functional life.

The focus of the KeraSoft 2008 Workshop was the introduction the KeraSoft lenses for keratoconus – even for advanced cases. Co-presenters were Lynn White and Mr David Jory. The patients were assessed in clinic and then fitted with KeraSoft3 lenses. Mr Jory suggested to patients possible surgical solutions such as Corneal Cross Linking (CXL) and phakic implants. CXL was at this time just becoming available in TnT at the Caribbean Institute.

At the conference, both practitioners presented their joint findings and selected case studies from the cinical sessions. KeraSoft Lecture  by Lynn White      Keratoconus/CXL Lecture  by David Jory

Lynn White graduated from UMIST in 1977 and qualified as an optometrist the following year. She attained an MSc in 1984, at UMIST, based on the study Higher Order Aberrations. Since then she has worked in all areas of optometry: locum work, domiciliary, hospital contact lens clinics and ran her own business for 20 years in South Manchester.

In 2002, she moved abroad to work in Trinidad for nearly three years where she began to study keratoconus in more detail, as this condition is very prevalent in the Caribbean. She returned to the UK at the end of 2004 and now works in practice and as keratoconus consultant for Ultravision, lecturing in the UK and overseas.  In 2009, she launched the KeraSoft Clinic in Mayfair in partnership with UltraVision, a practice dedicated to keratoconus contact lens fitting.

She has been involved in developing the KeraSoft IC (Irregular Cornea) lens designed for more complex corneas – particularly the Sector Management Control lens which allows complete customisation of the back surface geometry of the soft lens. She presented Case Studies of this design at BCLA 2009, where she also presented.
